2014 summer internship/course in Geneva for graduate students

...
....
I'm writing with a request: that you could alert your network of graduate students about Duke's summer internship/course for masters or Ph.D. students, located in Geneva, Switzerland.  Students from various fields (e.g., public policy, environmental science, law, political science, business, medicine) are welcome.

I'm the instructor for the "Environment, Energy, and the Economy" track, and we also offer tracks in health policy or humanitarian action.  To maximize students' face-time and interaction with policy practitioners, we place students in summer internships in institutions around Geneva (e.g., UNEP, WTO, UNHCR, WHO, WMO, UNCTAD, UNECE, ILO, ITC, Earthmind, IUCN, ICTSD, IISD) and we also provide an intensive 5-day course of guest speakers and site visits.  Geneva is excellent for that because it is home to UN bodies, NGOs, business groups, country missions, etc.  The program offers a course-only option if students do not wish to hold an internship — the courses usually are held in the last week in June or first week in July.  Outside of the course week, students gain professional experience with their internship placements and also have ample time for networking, researching, socializing, and traveling in a great spot right in the center of Europe.

The application deadline is Monday, November 25, at 5:00 pm EST.
webinar info session with past participants will be held on Friday, October 25, at 3:00 pm EST — to sign up for the webinar, students should email program assistant Maggie Woods at: margaret.j.woods@duke.edu

Please see the program's website for more information: www.sanford.duke.edu/geneva
Any questions, please contact program assistant Maggie Woods at: margaret.j.woods@duke.edu

Would you mind distributing this information to students who may be interested?

Thank you for your help,

Call for applications for the Asia-Pacific Graduates' Youth Forum on Green Economy

25–29 September 2012, Kathmandu, Nepal

Through its Asia-Pacific Mountain Network (APMN), the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) has been engaging youth and building their capacity to bring about positive changes in society through several different initiatives. Since it began in 2009, the global membership of the Youth Engagement in Sustainable Mountain Development (Y4SMD) initiative has grown to 2,000 members, a majority of whom are from ICIMOD’s regional member countries – Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Myanmar, Nepal, and Pakistan. In 2010, ICIMOD started organizing youth forums in member countries to build the technical capacity and leadership skills of youth in the region as well as enhance their knowledge on the most burning issues in mountain development. In 2011, these forums were expanded to include the entire Asia-Pacific region, and the recent Global Youth Forum on Mountain Issues and Sustainable Actions, held in conjunction with the Rio+20 summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, included participants from around the globe.

Building on the success of these ventures, ICIMOD is now partnering with the Consortium for Capacity Building (CCB) at the University of Colorado at Boulder and Small Earth Nepal (SEN) to bring together young graduates from the region and develop their knowledge on green economy at the second Asia-Pacific youth forum.

Belpasso International Summer School on Environmental and Resource Economics - Call for Applications

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

University of Catania - EAERE - FEEM
Belpasso International Summer School on Environmental and Resource Economics
Sustainable Development: Theory and Measurement Methods
Belpasso (Italy), September 2nd - 8th, 2012
http://www.feem-project.net/belpasso_2012/
Deadline for applications: June 24th, 2012
The Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Catania, the European Association of Environmental and Resource Economists (EAERE) and the Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei (FEEM), with the sponsorship of the Municipality of Belpasso, are pleased to announce the Belpasso International Summer School on Environmental and Resource Economics for postgraduate students.

The 2012 Summer School will take place from the 2nd to the 8th of September in Belpasso, a city in the Province of Catania, Sicily, Italy. The theme of this Summer School is
Sustainable Development: Theory and Measurement Methods.

Ensuring a continuous increase in well-being throughout the world is one of the main challenges to humankind. Since the mid-80s, awareness that economic growth has not necessarily improved living conditions has led to the quest for sustainable development. The concept of sustainability implies the need to consider in policy agendas the long-term interactions among the economic, environmental and social spheres, reconciling their potential trade-offs. In spite of the increased effort of the academia, no agreement on the definition and quantitative assessment of sustainability has been reached to date on a worldwide basis. The main aim of the 2012 Belpasso summer school is to collect the latest advancements in the field from research leaders, in order to provide young scholars with the most appropriate theoretical and methodological background and to enable them to make a valuable contribution to the post Rio+20 scientific debate.

About Landscape Functions and People
The course offers participants an opportunity to familiarize themselves with current practices for landscape approaches. It will provide opportunities to develop practical skills and experience in the use of principles and tools applicable for landscape-level planning, monitoring, and implementation.
The course will equip participants to:
  • Understand the context, principles, and relevance of landscape approaches for natural resources governance in today's world
  • Understand how landscape-level planning processes can be developed and how they can be facilitated
  • Become familiar with a variety of tools for landscape-level strategic planning and gain experience in applying and adapting these in real-life situations
  • Understand how landscape approaches can contribute to improved decision making, sustainable management, and monitoring of natural resources
A variety of training approaches will be used. As with all our courses, the style will be participatory and hands-on. Course facilitators will encourage "learning by doing." Participants are expected to bring their own material to the course, allowing them to share their experiences with others. A web-based learning platform supports participants in applying their individual action plans and learning in their work situations.

International School Mountain Ecology and Global Change, Austria

Mountain ecosystems are important on a global basis and are particularly susceptible to the effects of diverse global changes. At present, there is accumulating evidence that global changes such as for example, in climate, in land use, and in atmospheric nitrogen pollution are strongly affecting mountain ecosystems, even remote ones. One of the main values of this International School is the unique opportunity participants have to receive a really multidisciplinary overview about the research going on in aquatic and terrestrial mountain ecosystems in different parts of the world. Thus, the objective of this School is to provide the participants with a state-of-the-art overview on the research done in mountain ecosystems and to foster cross-disciplinary links.
Chair:  Prof. Ruben Sommaruga (University of Innsbruck)
