Interesting opportunity: Apply for Global Power Shift with 350.org by 4th January 2013

Hello,

I’m writing to let you know about Global PowerShift, an international gathering that will take place in Istanbul, Turkey from June 10-17, 2013. This gathering will bring together 600 young organizers from around the world to skill share, trade tactics and connect on how we will be the generation that turns the tide on the climate crisis. Organizers who attend Global PowerShift will then return to their own countries and help to organize a regional gathering, developing regional campaigns, goals, actions and networks. As co2 levels and sea levels rise exponentially - so must our movement.

We know that the ecological crisis is merely a symptom of an unjust system and unsustainable culture. To accomplish the deep systemic change needed to avert complete catastrophe we will need to bring together a wide diversity of movements and thus we strongly encourage young organizers from a diverse backgrounds and struggles to apply. You can apply here, and please share this email with anyone you think might bring unique skills to this historic gathering. Application deadline is December 16th, and all expenses will be covered for participants.

Invitation: Global Youth Forum on Mountain Issues and Green Solution: From Rio de Janeiro to Doha, 1 December 2012 at UNFCCC COP18 (Venue: Climate Change Studio, Qatar National Convention Centre)

Global Youth Forum on Mountain Issues and Green Solution:

From Rio de Janeiro to Doha

Date: 1 December 2012 at UNFCCC COP18
Venue: Climate Change Studio, Qatar National Convention Centre. Doha
Further information: Ms. Sameera Zaib, sameerazaib.env@gmail.com

Background
COP18 has a special importance since it needs to finalize the old negotiation tracks, and make new commitments towards Post 2015. It is imperative to involve youth in this process, and consider their voices and issues. Rio+20 reaffirmed that we need a more sustainable development path. To achieve this we need to change how we think and act, develop and implement capacity building programs, and hence engage youth in these programs in order to secure green jobs and a green economy.

Inspired from International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD’s) youth programme - Youth for Sustainable Mountain Development (Y4SMD), the Asia Pacific Youth Task force on Rio+20 (APYTF) was formed in April 2011 to advocate mountain agenda in the context of Rio+20 and mobilize youth in preparation lf Rio+20 and implementation of its outcomes. Since then APYTF has organized several events locally and regionally and has taken part in several important events including the Rio+20 Conference – locally, regionally and globally. In this preparation APYTF co-organized ‘Global youth Forum on Mountain Issues and Sustainable Actions’ at Rio+2o Conference in Brazil in June 2012, ‘National Youth Forum on Green Solutions in Pakistan’ in Islamabad in November 2012 and ‘Workshop on Green Economy in South Asia’ at South Asian Youth Conference (SAYC) in November 2012. To take forward messages of major past events and youth in Asia Pacific region and also to engage them in UNFCCC COP process, we like to join hands with global youth by organising ’Global Youth Forum on Mountain Issues and Green Solutions’ at UNFCCC COP18 on 1 December 2012 in Doha.

Objectives:
              - To provide an opportunity for global youth to discuss global issues and their concerns regarding COP18.
                 - To identify the Mountain Youth issues and priorities for Green Economy.
                 - To develop and share Global Youth Appeal for COP18 delegates.

In order to enable this wider range of environmentalists to participate to the conference an online platform has been set: now you can participate from your own computer! This is your chance to be part of it and get connected with young people from all over the world who share the same vision and walk through the same way to halt the loss of biodiversity. Be a part of the solution! Now! Just register here:

https://meet31332461.adobeconnect.com/_a1070055801/gybn/event/registration.html
After approving your registration we will send you a detailed program with the online participation guide that will help you through your participation.

If you are interested in GYBN, you’re also welcome to subscribe to our international mailing list at https://listi.jpberlin.de/mailman/listinfo/gybn
If you wish to receive regular updates on Biodiversity and youth activities, you can also become a fan of GYBN on facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thegybn

About GYBN: Building a global youth coalition to halt the loss of Biodiversity!
GYBN’ vision is to create a global platform that will enable young environmentalists from all parts of the world to connect in order to join forces for the protection of biological diversity on our planet. GYBN also aims to become the international coordination platform for youth participation in the CBD (Convention on Biological Diversity) and is committed to bring the opinions and positions of youth into the negotiations and make their collective voice heard. The establishment of GYBN has been prepared by an interim steering committee, consisting of young people from thirteen countries, which was formed shortly after CBD COP10 in October 2010. GYBN is officially supported by the CBD secretariat.

About the GYBN Kick-Off meeting: 35 participants, 7 days, 1 goal
The GYBN Kick-Off meeting will be hosted by NAJU (German Youth Association for the Protection of Nature) from August 21st to 27th in Berlin, Germany, and is organized in close coordination with the GYBN interim steering committee. Among others, the six-day conference will feature capacity building sessions and policy briefings on the CBD and the main issues on the agenda of COP11. Furthermore numerous workshops on topics like lobbying, organizing creative actions and campaigns as well as press- and public relations will be offered. However, the emphasis of the conference will lie on the establishment of GYBN and the preparation of youth participation at COP11. For this purpose participants will take part in a so called “Future Workshop” session and determine the structure, mandate and coordination etc. of GYBN and develop plans and political targets for meaningful youth participation at COP11.

Call for applications for the Asia-Pacific Graduates' Youth Forum on Green Economy

25–29 September 2012, Kathmandu, Nepal

Through its Asia-Pacific Mountain Network (APMN), the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) has been engaging youth and building their capacity to bring about positive changes in society through several different initiatives. Since it began in 2009, the global membership of the Youth Engagement in Sustainable Mountain Development (Y4SMD) initiative has grown to 2,000 members, a majority of whom are from ICIMOD’s regional member countries – Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Myanmar, Nepal, and Pakistan. In 2010, ICIMOD started organizing youth forums in member countries to build the technical capacity and leadership skills of youth in the region as well as enhance their knowledge on the most burning issues in mountain development. In 2011, these forums were expanded to include the entire Asia-Pacific region, and the recent Global Youth Forum on Mountain Issues and Sustainable Actions, held in conjunction with the Rio+20 summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, included participants from around the globe.

Building on the success of these ventures, ICIMOD is now partnering with the Consortium for Capacity Building (CCB) at the University of Colorado at Boulder and Small Earth Nepal (SEN) to bring together young graduates from the region and develop their knowledge on green economy at the second Asia-Pacific youth forum.

The Asia-Pacific Graduates' Youth Forum on Green Economy – to be held in Kathmandu, Nepal, 25–29 September 2012 – will bring together 40 participants from more than 15 countries who are engaged in sustainability issues. With technical support from several leading institutions, the five-day programme will include capacity building and knowledge exchange sessions, leadership exercises, and excursions to nearby environmental projects.

This forum has been made possible with support from the Asia-Pacific Network for Global Change Research (APN) under the CAPaBLE Program. It is also supported by the Government of Nepal, the Swiss Agency for Development Cooperation (SDC), the Mountain Partnership (MP), the United States Agency for International Development/Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance (USAID/OFDA), Small Earth Australia (SEA), and the Centre for Hydrology at the University of Saskatchewan, Canada.

Biodiversity and Society: Societal dimensions of the conservation and utilisation of biological diversity, 14-16 Nov 2012, Germany

Call for Abstracts

Biodiversity and Society: Societal dimensions of the conservation and utilisation of biological diversity

Conference 14th – 16th November 2012 in Göttingen

For the past two decades, the conservation of biological diversity has been a key issue on the international political agenda. Both international and national interpretations of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) recognize that biodiversity conservation cannot be achieved with ecological approaches alone, and that a large variety of social, institutional and economic dimensions also play key roles. This complex and multifaceted topic requires trans- and interdisciplinary approaches, and should not be limited to specific questions of single disciplines.

With this in mind, the conference “Biodiversity and Society: Societal dimensions of the conservation and utilisation of biological diversity” aims to provide a scientific contribution to the discussion on the diverse and complex problems associated with biodiversity conservation. The conference will be a platform for exchange between renowned keynote speakers from academia, junior researchers, and representatives from the business and political sectors. Contributions could, for example, consider:

  • Effects of anthropogenic global change on biodiversity
  • Value and valuation of biodiversity
  • Biodiversity as an aspect of environmental law
  • Instruments to tackle resource conflicts
  • Societal approaches to biodiversity conservation
  • Perspectives on biodiversity in different socio-cultural contexts
  • Progress and problems of local, national and international biodiversity policy

Inter and transdisciplinary research is particularly encouraged, as are contributions from junior researchers. Please submit your abstracts (in German or English) for posters or oral presentations before the 15th of June 2012 online at the following website:

A response will be sent within 4 weeks of the closing date. Please note that oral presentations will be limited to 20 minutes.

There will be a guided poster session, and a citable book of abstracts, as well as the opportunity to publish full papers in a book of conference proceedings, is planned. Further information about the conference and about online registration is available through the link above.
