Young Women Conservation Biologists Award Road to New Zealand - 25th SCB ICCB 2011 in Auckland Deadline for Receiving Nominations: 31 August, 2011

BACKGROUND

The Young Women Conservation Biologist (YWCB) working group of the Africa Section of the Society for Conservation Biology (SCB) has great pleasure in announcing its Young Women Conservation Biologists Award for 2011. The YWCB Working Group was established in 2005 by the Africa Section of the SCB, based on an urgent need to fill the gap created by the limited numbers of women professionals in the field of conservation science in Africa. It was further mandated to act as a platform for young African conservation biologists to share experiences (albeit with a major emphasis on women), generating incentives and mentorship opportunities to strengthen conservation biologists in their careers.

THE AWARD

The award is non-monetary and aimed at recognizing and applauding the contributions of early to mid-career African professional women in conservation. The nominee should have demonstrated, during their career so far in Africa:

- Evidence of leadership, creativity, self-motivation and enthusiasm in the execution of conservation work;

- Evidence of service (scientific research, educational, policy etc.) to conservation biology;

- Ability to work with others across gender, social class and ethnicity to achieve concrete conservation outcomes. The 2011 award will be presented at the 25th International Congress for Conservation Biology (ICCB 2011) www.conbio.org/2011 in Auckland, New Zealand to be held from

5-9 December 2011, along side SCB's Global Distinguished Service Award, LaRoe and Early Career Conservationist Awards. SCB shall support the winner to travel from her workplace to New Zealand for the congress, receive the award in person, network professionally, and ideally to present a paper on the recognized work.

SCOPE OF AWARD

The scope of the award is open to any area of conservation science directed towards practical conservation action. A nominator of high professional standing should submit the application on behalf of an exceptional nominee. Nominations should be supported by at least two letters of recommendation. Self-nominations may be considered under unusual circumstances only if a highly accomplished candidate works in such isolation that a nominator is not available (such circumstance will require description and justification). The application should clearly explain the nominee's role within the conservation community and evidence of her professional accomplishments, including her ability to work with diverse interests to achieve balanced, pragmatic solutions to conservation challenges. The Awards Panel will not normally make awards to African women working outside the continent, or to early career students with no outstanding practical accomplishments.

NOMINATIONS

Nominations on behalf of potential awardees are invited from the conservation community (e.g., scientists, managers, activists). The nominee must, however, work explicitly in the field of conservation biology, rather than advocacy or education without explicit conservation biology content. Nominations will be peer-reviewed by an Awards Panel of SCB conservation scientists and managers. A key to adaptive capacity in fish and wildlife conservation is knowledge of value orientations, beliefs, attitudes, norms and behaviors of individuals, communities and institutions.  In the absence of such insight, managers of fish and wildlife resources will not have the knowledge needed to develop a comprehensive perspective on wildlife and fisheries management. Human dimensions insight and application is a major section along the pathway to success as an adaptive conservation organization.

The Ministry of Water Supply and Drainage of Sri Lanka together with Community Water Supply &  Sanitation Project (CWSSP), National Water Supply & Drainage Board ( NWS&DB) and Lanka Rain Water Harvesting Forum ( LRWHF) will organize a 3 day conference under the theme "Community and Water Services - Challenges for Sustainability"

Millennium Development Goals (MDG) are set to halve the world's population without access to safe water by 2015. Despite Asia's  fast growing market for consumer goods, technology and global investment, the stark fact is that out of the 1.1 billion  global population without access to improved water, almost two thirds live in Asia. Many Asian countries are ill equipped to provide the needed safe water and sanitation to their growing population. Many of this un-served population also live in rural areas which are primarily agriculture based.  Lack of access to water in an agriculture based rural economy, will inevitably impact adversely on the socio-economic well being of the community. Asia also has fast burgeoning mega-cities with major resource constraints especially for the underprivileged communities

There are economic, environmental, social and cultural constraints associated with the provision of safe water.  Women are the most affected from lack of access to safe drinking water since in a water scarce situations  they spend a large part of their  time in accessing water for domestic needs, thereby limiting their involvement on other  especially income generating  activities

Sri Lanka has over 15 years of experience promoting community organizations to provide their own water supply and sanitation facilities through community water supply & sanitation projects. Over 3500 community based organizations that were formed to implement the projects are now empowered to manage, operate and maintain these systems.

Our region has had extensive experience over the past three decades in promoting the role of communities and households in deciding, executing and maintaining their own water service systems through community based projects. These achievements contribute to such success stories in water and sanitation in our region.

In view of the urgent need to provide water services for an ever burgeoning Asian population, it is useful to take stock of current status in planning future activities. This conference plans to provide a platform for sharing knowledge, strategies, experiences and best practices of the region's communities with special reference to the role of women.

Objectives:

1. To share and highlight experiences of actors and beneficiaries in community empowerment through water supply

2. Promote Beneficiary participation including the role of women in community water projects

ARThinkSouthAsia Fellowship 2011

The ARThinkSouthAsia Fellowship is designed to help develop skills, knowledge, networks and experience of potential leaders in the cultural sector of South Asia which include museums, the visual and performing arts and digital media. We believe that by supporting exceptional individuals to make a step-change in their skills and career potential, we can bring substantial benefit to the cultural field as a whole.

Fifteen fellows will be selected from across South Asia.

The Fellowship includes-
• A two week residential course from in March
• A secondment / internship in Germany over the fellowship year
• A concluding seminar in March the following year

The two week residential course is designed to include a balance of theory and professional training and will consist of five to six modules which include latest thinking in cultural management in areas such as strategic planning, project management, strategic finance and fundraising, marketing, communication, and internet technologies amongst others. These modules will be led by a mix of Indian and international professional trainers and academics and will be supplemented by expert guest lectures. Participation in the residential programme is mandatory.

Each participant will be offered a funded four week secondment / internship best suited to his/her needs, interests and objectives in a cultural organization in Germany during the year. The Fellow will attend a closing seminar at the end of the Fellowship year to present and share updates on his/her project and learnings of the secondment with next years batch of fellows.

Announcement of the international "Green Talents" Competition 2011

How can green growth for all be achieved? What can be done to implement sustainability strategies into society? Young scientists from all over the world who are seeking solutions to these and other pressing questions related to sustainability research are invited to participate in the prestigious "Green Talents" competition of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).

The award under the patronage of Federal Minister Professor Annette Schavan was presented for the second time in 2010 and is now starting its third application round. Talented young researchers (up to 35 years old) from around the world specialising in the area of sustainable development are invited to apply for "Green Talents - The International Forum for High Potentials in Sustainable Development". The competition will give 20 exceptional scientists the opportunity to meet and exchange views with today's leading experts in the field of sustainability in Germany. A decisive selection criterion is the crucial contribution of the applicant's research to mastering global challenges such as climate change, declining energy resources and massive environmental pollution.

The winners of the competition will participate in a ten-day international science forum taking place in autumn 2011. Touring through Germany, the "Green Talents" will visit leading universities, research institutions and companies active in the field of sustainable development. They will gather specific information about research activities on-site and learn about opportunities for cooperation with German partners. The forum will also include individual meetings with experts, as well as cultural events and the award ceremony at the German Parliament (tbc) in Berlin.

During the year following their participation in the "Green Talents Forum", the winners of the competition will be invited to return to Germany for an additional research stay (up to three months). Both the Forum and the research stay will be fully financed by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

Germany is one of the leading locations in the world for sustainability research, and is a strong partner for international cooperation in this field. The country takes global responsibility by promoting sustainable development and green growth. The German Federal Government is providing important funds for the development of sustainable innovations in research and development, also for further increasing collaborations with outstanding researchers throughout the world. The country's innovative power in this area is especially attractive for young international scientists who can benefit from the exchange with a strong partner.
