Dear Goldschmidt Delegate,

Goldschmidt2013 is approaching, and there is not too much time left before the deadline for abstract submission, field trip bookings and applications for grants and assistance (April 12th). A final reminder will be sent out one week before the deadline, but it was thought that it might be helpful to send one now, especially for those delegates who will attend EGU in April.

All dates and deadlines for the conference can be found on the website. This page also gives the dates for the next three Goldschmidts. Goldschmidt2014 will be in Sacramento, California (June 8-13, 2014); Goldschmidt2015 will be in Prague (August 16-21, 2015) and Goldschmidt2016 will be in Yokohama, Japan (June 26 - July 1, 2016). Please put these dates in your diary and plan to join us.

Most of the other information you need was sent to you in February, but we have repeated it below in case this should be more convenient.

The Goldschmidt conferences are now the most important forum for the discussion of recent results in geochemistry and related fields. Florence is one of the most beautiful and culturally rich cities in the world. It is with great pleasure that we have been able to bring these two together this year. We hope you will enjoy it.

The abstract submission and registration pages for Goldschmidt2013 are now all live. Abstract submission will remain open until April 12th, and early registration will end on June 25th.

Abstract Submission:
200 sessions in 24 themes covering the whole range of geochemistry and related fields have been organised, and there are three general sessions for the science that does not fit into these. Each delegate may submit one abstract as presenting author; keynote speakers alone of these delegates may submit two abstracts. Abstracts should be completed on the templates provided, and should be no longer than a single column if they are to be accepted. Full instructions on how to submit an abstract are available on the website.

Registration:
Forms for registering for Goldschmidt2013 are now open. Delegates may obtain a lower registration rate by being a member of the European Association of Geochemistry, the Geochemical Society or the Geochemical Society of Japan (EAG, GS or GSJ); note that membership should be valid at the time of the conference. To rejoin one of the societies, please visit the EAG, GS or GSJ websites, or (perhaps more conveniently) simply pay the non-member rate for Goldschmidt2013 which will provide EAG membership for the following 23 months. Membership of the EAG or GS will include a subscription to Elements magazine and EAG membership will also include a subscription to Geochemical Perspectives.

Assistance and Grants:
A limited amount has been made available to support graduate students and delegates from low-income countries. Application forms will be available from 1 March and will close on 12 April.

Workshops and Field Trips:
A range of exciting workshops and field trips has been arranged around the conference. Registration for field trips will close on the Abstract deadline (April 12th). Registration for workshops will remain open until June 25th, where abstracts for the workshops are invited, these should be submitted directly to the workshop organisers, and arrive no later than April 12th. Space on many of the field trips and workshops is limited, so delegates are advised to register early.

Social Events and Tours:
A wine and cheese tasting event, a classical concert, and a conference banquet have been organised for delegates. Details of these can be found through the social events pages, and places can be booked via the registration pages. Space at some of these is limited, so we recommend early booking. Florence is famous all over the world for its unique beauties and for having been the cradle of Renaissance. We have therefore arranged for a range of interesting and thematic tours to be available to give delegates the chance to visit the most famous monuments, such as, for example, the Cathedral, the Uffizi Gallery, the David by Michelangelo etc. together with hidden corners and the unexpected art treasures that only Florence can offer. These are being arranged by a local agency, Bloom, and details are available from the website, booking will be available from the middle of March.

Accommodation:
There is a wide range of hotel accommodation near the Convention Center. Some of this accommodation will fill quite quickly, so early booking is recommended. Delegates may arrange their own accommodation, or book it through the Bloom agency in Florence if they prefer. Bloom's site will enable delegates to book their accommodation at three, four and five star hotels selected at very good rates and centrally located, delegates will have the register on the Bloom site to use this facility. Downtown apartments and nice farmhouses near the city center will also be available for bookings for delegates who prefer to be independent, or to bring their family for a great vacation. Information will also be available for group hotel reservations: please email Bloom at gold2013hotel@b-bloom.it for further details. Economy student accommodation has also been arranged, and can be booked as part of the registration process before June 25th.

Meals:
There is a wide range of restaurants within easy walking distance of the Convention Center. However, the conference has also arranged for economy boxed lunches, or more substantial buffet lunches to be available for delegates. These can be booked during the registration process before June 25th.

Travel and Visas:
Travel to Florence is very easy, and the Convention Center is located near the center of the city, and immediately adjacent to the main railway station. Flights can be conveniently taken either direct to Florence, or to Pisa which is less than 1 hour away by train. Delegates requiring visas to enter Italy (Schengen Zone) should complete the relevant sections of the registration form once payment has been made; letters of invitation will then be sent from Italy by the Bloom agency. It can take embassies a considerable time to process visa requests, so delegates are advised to register early.

UN-Habitat on Tuesday launched a call for applications for the Urban Youth Fund

In a press release, the agency announced that the Fund will for the fifth year in a row provide grants to projects led by young people aged 15-32 years who are piloting innovative approaches to employment, good urban governance, shelter and secure tenure. Small development initiatives are eligible for grants up to $25,000. These grants aim at promoting youth empowerment as the solution for better urban governance.

Indeed, of the one billion slum dwellers in the world today, it is estimated that more than 70% are under the age of 30. These young people have few resources available to improve their own living. Interestingly though, there are many youth-led initiatives in slums and squatter settlements around the world that require support in their efforts to transform their communities. This has led UN-Habitat to reconsider the youth as drivers for change. Through this Fund, UN-Habitat embraces the belief that youth are a solution for sustainable urban development.

The agency invites young people based in cities or towns from the developing world to apply for grants from the Fund. The application will open from February 15th 2013 to April 15th 2013. More information and details are available at www.unhabitat.org/youthfund.

Summer program at Columbia University on "The History of Climate Change and the Future of Global Governance"

The History of Climate Change and the Future of Global Governance

The Hertog Global Strategy Initiative (HGSI) seeks talented
undergraduates, graduate students, and mid-career professionals for
its 2013 seminar on the History of Climate Change and the Future of
Global Governance.

HGSI is a research program that explores how the world community has
responded to planetary threats to derive lessons that will help us
take on the challenges of the present and the future. Each summer, a
select group of participants comes to Columbia University for three
months to work with leading scholars and policymakers. This year's
initiative hopes to train a new generation of researchers and leaders
who understand both the development of climate science and the
changing nature of world politics.

The 2013 seminar will be taught by Matthew Connelly, Professor of
History at Columbia University, and Jim Fleming, Professor of Science,
Technology, and Society at Colby College. They will be assisted in the
classroom by Deborah Coen, Paul Edwards, Mike Hulme, Bill McKibben,
Gavin Schmidt, and nearly a dozen other leaders in the field.

Participants pursue original research both independently and in teams.
Students will receive eight credit points for the seminar, the
equivalent of two semester-long courses at Columbia.

Dickinson College: Asia and the Environment Post-Doc 2013-2014

Dickinson College seeks a post-doctoral teaching fellow in Earth or Environmental Sciences/Studies with topical interests in Asia; field experience in Asia preferred.  The fellowship is for the academic year beginning fall 2013, with the potential for an additional year of support. Funding is provided under a grant from the Luce Initiative on Asian Studies and the Environment (LIASE) and Dickinson College.  The successful candidate will teach one or two undergraduate courses annually, designed in coordination with the host department and with possibilities across a broad range of natural and social science topics.   Assistance with organizing a faculty colloquium in his or her field of expertise is also expected.
